Thursday Thoughts: Step-Mom Summer

What a week it’s been! From being busy at my beauty studio, keeping up with the blog, taking a road trip to Houston to pick up my step-princess that flew in from Seattle, to getting back to work, getting her settled in and doing a whole bunch of fun stuff and lots of manicures. I can honestly say this week has been very productive. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous on how my step-princess was going to take the drastic change in my household; meaning, it would mainly be the two of us spending time together aside from all the family events and activities. I was worried she would ask me questions I could not answer, feel a different energy, or like something was missing. In all honesty, she is actually the most comfortable she’s ever been here. My home is no longer a trial visit; it’s not just some getaway, or a time to establish relationships. Now, it’s her visiting her family. Spending time with those that she loves and experiencing a different type of positive environment. We have come a long way and I am proud to say that my consistence with her grew into mutual love and respect.

People always say that kids understand more than we give them credit for; not that I didn’t ever believe that, but seeing it with my own eyes is just amazing. My step princess is bright, loving, witty, and fun…her little spirit remains though her visit isn’t its usual circumstance. I think it has a lot to do with the warmth of my home, my family, and my own heart. I believe she feels all that and its created a safe and cozy feeling for her, so naturally, it was easy for her to consider us family. I am a strong believer in giving credit where credit is due; so with that said, I am graciously thankful to her bio mom for allowing my family and I to still be her daughter’s family, despite what happened in my marriage. I think that with the both of us being on the same page when it comes to that will help make my step-princess stronger, will provide a great example of doing what’s right and what family is truly about.

Her summer visit has just started and we have done so many fun things already. Seeing her little face light up with new experiences never gets old and being able to have her around my nephews is such an awesome feeling. I know not everyone agrees with the route I decided to take with my step-daughter…but like I have always said, you divorce spouses, not children. Happy Thursday!
